"I was very hungry, but I looked at the world map in my teacher's hand in humanities class, thinking that I would go to other countries when I grew up," recalled Ummaru Makeri, an 8-year-old from the northwestern Zamfara state, at an orphanage near the capital of Nigeria in Africa's Western Gulf.
No crying, no complaining, she spoke calmly, as if she was talking about other people's affairs. It was not because of despair, but because these things were too common for them. Rice with beans was the best lunch they could get, while many more children lived on water and bark. Even so, the number of students in the classroom has been decreasing until all the children have given up their last dreams of learning because of hunger.
There are about 3.1 million children under the age of five die from malnutrition every year in the world, and 66 million school-age children in developing countries do not get enough food every year, with Africa alone accounting for 23 million children. Hunger, the world's greatest health risk, kills more people each year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
However, there are people who don't want to give up.
On December 7, 2022, Samantha, the head of Moden Charity, and her team visited the local orphanage and expressed their deep condolences.
Samantha said that part of the donations have been distributed. At present, 1,200 children are no longer suffering from hunger because of the implementation of Moden Charity’s African Orphanage Breakfast Program. Moden Charity will also bring free breakfast to 23 schools in Nigeria. Starting with the free breakfast program in orphanages, Moden Charity will launch more school and community charity programs in Nigeria and other developing countries in the future.
Nigeria, Africa is Samantha's first stop. She hopes to use the accumulation of her career in the first half of her life to make some changes for this continent. She, who has been a businessperson for most of her life, fully spread the business knowledge she has accumulated throughout her life in this pristine continent of Africa. She took off her halo and walked towards people, like a teenager full of enthusiasm for life and empathy for suffering.
This reminds me of what Bill Gates once said: "I'm certainly well taken care of in terms of food and clothes ... Money has no utility to me beyond a certain point. Its utility is entirely in building an organization and getting the resources out to the poorest in the world." Samantha's words in the interview were simple but touching.
Samantha was born in 1987. As she travelled across the African continent to do charity, Samantha felt that this was the responsibility entrusted to her by the time.
Samantha's arrival was welcomed by the local government and organizations such as the Red Cross. After entering the orphanage, Samantha and her team sent supplies such as bread, drinking water, instant noodles and condolence money to the orphanage, and extended heartfelt greetings and blessings to them.
After the event, Samantha and her team took photos with the children, and told them to study hard and cherish this special big family. Samantha said that Moden company will continue to care and support the orphanage as always, so that the children can grow up healthily under the care of love. It is hoped that through such events, more love and positive energy will be passed to the society and let more people pay attention to these children, so that they can grow up as healthily and happily as normal children and have a happy childhood.
